Horsegirl is an American band formed in Chicago, which quickly stood out for its fresh and unpretentious way of reviving the spirit of 1990’s alternative rock. Their music combines indie rock, noise pop, and post-punk, with raw guitars, hypnotic melodies, and a youthful energy that sounds both spontaneous and conscious. The songs thrive on the essentials - noise, rhythm, and an almost diary-like honesty - avoiding excess and valuing a sonic authenticity that is rare in the contemporary scene.
Their debut album, Versions of Modern Performance (2022), produced by John Agnello, consolidated the band's identity, balancing minimalism, tension, and a subtle pop sensibility, addressing themes such as alienation, friendship, and growth. The second album, Phonetics On and On (2025), produced by Cate Le Bon, marks a step forward in the band's sound, with more elaborate arrangements, experimental textures, and an introspective approach, while maintaining the raw energy and honesty that define Horsegirl, showing a growing artistic maturity without losing the essence that makes them unique.
