Maruja is an English band formed in 2014, starting as a duo with Harry Wilkinson and Matt Buonaccorsi, who were later joined by Joe Carroll and Jacob Hayes. Did you know that... the band's name was inspired by a sign on a shop they visited during a vacation in Spain? Maruja are difficult to pigeonhole into genres: they combine post-punk, experimental jazz, noise, and even hip-hop, creating an intense, emotional, and explosive sound. This energy is also present in their concerts, which become unpredictable experiences, alternating between calm and atmospheric moments and chaotic sonic explosions, with close and vibrant interaction with the audience.
Before their first album, the band released several EP’s: “Maruja EP” (2016), “Explicit Trickery” (2017), and “Compassion” (2019). More recently, they released “Knocknarea” (2023), “Connla’s Well” (2024) - with singles such as “Zeitgeist” and “The Invisible Man” - and “Tír na nÓg” (2025). Their debut album, Pain to Power (2025), shows a mature and confident band, capable of transforming anguish, rebellion, and urgency into dense and sophisticated musical pieces. The single “Break the Tension” reflects their sound identity well: fierce, lyrics that address anxiety, oppression, and social tension, and intense instrumentation that takes the listener on an almost physical emotional journey.
